Cognitive behavioural therapy
Recommended Maladaptive Daydreaming therapies
If you do decide to see a Psychologist then these are the treatments/therapies that may actually work for you:
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common type of talk therapy. It helps you view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way. This therapy was used in several MD studies including Dr. Somer’s and it has shown some effectiveness in treatment.
Psychoanalysis
This approach focuses on changing problematic behaviors, feelings, and thoughts by discovering their unconscious meanings and motivations. Psychoanalysis, discovering what the true problem is, is always integrated in all forms of psychological treatment and is recommended for resolution of all mental issues including MD.
Mindfulness training
Mindfulness exercises are ways of paying attention to the present moment. This training helps people to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and body sensations so that instead of being overwhelmed by them, they’re better able to manage them. Although there is not enough research to back-up its effectiveness, some psychologists/psychiatrists recommended it based on their experience. Mindfulness techniques (like mindfulness meditation) were also recommended by the MD community based on trial and error.
If you want to see a Psychiatrist – looking into the possibility of taking drugs for MD: Antidepressants have been used with good results. Do not however, under any circumstances, take drugs on your own as these are addictive and toxic if taken at wrong dosages.
